The question on everyone's mind as they enter this year's close to sold out Bluesfest!

THURSDAY
Fantastic weather kicked off Bluesfest 2025 after some recent rains but as Thursday emerged the sky turned a stunning powder blue.
An almost sold out event with very few parking tickets left and no bus tickets available, people who had not prearranged their transport were scrambling for ideas of how to get to the site - the marketing strategy worked but there were some unhappy punters.
Many attendees spent a vast amount of time crowded outside the merch tent to get their hands on merch for what was billed as the last ever Bluesfest!
Spoiler alert - It’s not going to be the last!
QR codes were being displayed everywhere for earlybird 2026 tickets.
Debuting act for us was Sydney soul artist/adonis Don West. With a recently released debut EP & upcoming UK/EU tour he opened the Mojo festival vibe. He’s one to watch with a super cool attitude, smooth soul vocals & stage presence to match.

Next up on the Mojo stage was Neal Francis, a young mid 30 year old commanding an array of keyboards and a clutch of catchy tunes.

Melody Angel put in her high energy show on the Delta which she opened with some scorching Jimi Hendrix stylings. Her mom accompanied her on stage with backup vocals and some tambourine flair.
Christone “Kingfish” Ingram in his 3rd appearance has honed his skills and stagecraft even further. Joined on stage by his 3 piece band - keyboards (as well as keytar for a dual with Kingfish), bass and drums.
Kingfish has been a regular Bluesfest performer since his emergence on the world stage being tutored by Buddy Guy no less. As Buddy always does, Kingfish has picked up on the tradition of the crowd walkout as part of schtick which he performs towards the end of his set.
We decide to leave a bit earlier to miss the carpark crawl as Tom Morello and Here Come The Mummies and several other performers we want to seeare playing other days over the upcoming weekend.

FRIDAY
We start today catching one of the acts that was definitely on our Bluesfest highlight must-see list. Marc Broussard, with a voice as smooth as silk, singing some soulful blues. We arrange to do nothing else and therefore catch the whole set. He had a crack guitarist in Bobby Schneck Jr. who added further depth to this already wonderful set, along with the only Australian musician in the band in Clayton Doley, who as you would imagine fits in effortlessly, along with Terry Scott Jr. on Drums and vocals and Devin Karrigan on bass and vocals.
Marc and the band perform songs from his soul cover album S.O.S. 2 Soul on a Mission. He mentions towards the end of the set a new blues album they are currently recording and will be coming out later this year after having so much fun making the S.O.S. 4: Blues For Your Soul album. The band finishes off with the track Fire from their latest album Time is a Thief (yep, that hour set went quick, we will need to catch their next set on Saturday evening on Delta Stage).
We next amble over to the Jambalaya tent, in its new spot, to check out the Memphis Three. All 3 musicians have won at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Fiona Boyes, Jimi Hocking and Frank Sultana spend the set sharing stories and songs, songs about exes; Fiona’s double entendre laden track Old and Stiff, a tribute to the Preacher; Jimi Hocking’s, I hate uke, Frank's The Devil's Hooch are all in the setlist. Jimi tells a lovely anecdote about his father, who was a musician in his own right and as Jimi mentions, you may not of heard of him but you know his music as he wrote the Countdown theme song.
Chicago musician, Neal Francis settled into his second Bluesfest gig for the weekend. Joining him on the Delta stage for this one was the Cat Empire horn section. Neal Francis is a singer, songwriter, and pianist. He is influenced by classic New Orleans artists such as Dr. John, the Meters, and Allen Toussaint, in addition to Sly Stone, Billy Preston, and Curtis Mayfield.
George Thorogood at 75 & his current Destroyers celebrating over 50 years as a band. The Mojo was packed to the rafters with the crowd itching for the 80s back catalogue.
The large crowd buy in big time to the “Bad Daddy” show - plenty of sing-a-longs with Get a Haircut, I Drink Alone, One Bourbon One scotch one beer & of course, Bad to the Bone all getting an airing during the 1 hour 15 minute set. The band admirably back up George with saxophonist Buddy Leach, guitarist Jim Suhler, Jeff Simons on drums and Bill Blough on bass. They finish the set with, in my opinion an odd choice of track, Gloria.
Gary Clark Jnr heated up the Mojo stage with a cool funk/bluesy set. Throwing in some beautiful Northern African drone style blues tracks to start with and also going back into his catalogue of bluesier songs was a delight. Don’t owe you a thang, Bright Lights, When my Train Pulls In all get a guernsey in the set list.
The band has been expanded since last time he visited Australia in 2019 King Zapata (with arguably the best headwear of the festival) on guitar is still there, Elijah Ford on bass, Dayne Reliford on keys, J.J. Johnson on drums, and Gary's sisters, Shawn, Savannah, and Shanan as the backing singers.

Melody Angel, it seems her schtick is to launch the set with a Hendrix cover. Saturday's was Foxy Lady!
A hard worker at Bluesfest appearing each day with high energy rock/blues guitar manifesting how good she is. On her 3rd visit to Bluesfest with a new self titled album out, she easily gained new fans with her on stage prowess & talent which has been well honed in her home town of Chicago.
Kim Churchill packed out the Jambalaya on his first return appearance for a number years. This once Bluesfest Busking winner has certainly gained many fans since those days. We hope to catch some of today’s set.
The Memphis Three, on the Delta Stage, entertained us for the second day with some witty banter and great blues. Frank, Jimi and Fiona playing various guitars with Jimi adding the occasional mandolin in the mix…yes mandolin is a blues instrument, think of Yank Rachell from the mid to later 1900!
Next on the Delta stage is Sweet Talk, with their brand of southern country soul rock (via Melbourne). Lead singer, Tane Walker’s vocals now much stronger, along with some great guitar from the talented David Turner & Tane’s brother Soren Walker also adding some lovely harmonies. Matter of fact we love that all the members of the band join in on the wonderful vocal harmonies. They make playing sweet sweet music look effortless!
On the recommendation of Howler, we stick around to catch the set by band Fools. We are not let down by these wonderful collection of musicians along with an incredible horn section. It’s a busy stage featuring all twelve members of the band but they allow each of the members their space and certainly got the crowd rocking and rolling along to their set.
Gary Clark Jr. backed off on the funk falsetto tracks and put down another killer set on the Mojo stage. He starts, as he did in yesterday’s set with a North African inspired Blues drone track.
We amble back to the Delta stage avoiding the crowd crush all around the Crossroads Stage tent who have been set up all afternoon with their camp chairs for I presume Xavier Rudd and Crowded House. It turns into a bit of a nightmare to negotiate your way through and organisers, security and stage MC's all ask for the chairs to be packed away or moved to an area which doesn't impact through traffic...I'm sure all took action on these requests!
CW Stoneking, one of our favs, was joined by 'Philbilly' Jenkins on Sousaphone & Stephen Grant on accordion. His quirky banter & off kilter guitar jungle blues set enthralled the crowd with some peoplestill not knowing how to take his songs but for those in the know make for some fun sing-a-alongs.
Marc Broussard and band start of the set playing to a smaller than expected crowd but the tent quickly fills as people recognise the quality of this artist’s music and stay to enjoy a sublime set of soul, rock and blues for Broussard’s second Bluesfest appearance. Hopefully not their last visit to Australia.
I leave it there for a night as I don’t wish to get caught in the carpark crawl as many others did leaving a half-hour later. It’s all about timing people and making wise decisions…maybe that’s just an old person’s thing?!
